The price of survival…

Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.

There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.

My virginity.

A forbidden auction…

Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.

Except he's playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.

THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.

Sophie's Review

Okay, I must say I'm the sweet of the SnS reads, I'm not gonna lie. But I was desperate to read this book since, like, forever. I knew this wasn't going to be sweet at all, but I'm surprised I liked it!

So, here we have a dark world with powerful and dangerous men and this sweet little girl fragile in pieces willing to do whatever to save her father and her mother's house. After her family's name was repudiated by everyone, she doesn't have anyone by her side.

She gets into this dark world and learns not everyone is as noble, perfect and honest as she thought at the very beginning. So, Avery must learn how to play or at least see what is coming next.

 Innocence and fragility and grace."

I liked Avery, the heroine, even though I didn't agree with half of the decision she made. She was intelligent but naïve. Loyal but desperate. Beautiful but she didn't know how to use her "assets" as everyone.

You're fucking perfect. An angel. A sacrifice on a marble altar."

She bored me at times and was predictable. I knew what was coming and what she was going to do. But I liked she had to get to her feet by herself. I liked that the hero wasn't EVERYWHERE saving her.

Now...

Gabriel Miller. He frustrated me so much. At first, I was like "Oh, he is dark, handsome, those eyes are killing me and he knows how to use his power to make everyone do whatever he wants".

But he deflated throughout the book.

He was confusing and I couldn't connect with him like I would've liked. He annoyed me with his sudden change of moods. Somehow he felt distant to me. He didn't quite get to me and for that reason, I didn't like him. Sorry.

The secondary characters, such as Harper, Avery's father, Damon, Cindy, Justin, I liked them but I'd have liked to see more of their personalities.

In overall, I liked the story. YAY! This was the first book I've read from Skye Warren and I LOVED her writing and the fact that she included mythology and history here. It was exquisite and rich. Totally worth it!

So, yeah. I'm already reading the second book and will do the review for The Knight as soon as I finish it!

BY THE WAY!! This review wouldn't look as flawless and more beautiful than me if it weren't for Emily. I luuv you!! Thanks for making this world better with those badass graphics <3
